Pond Design & Maintenance
Neck Deep Aquatics will get to the bottom of your pond problems. We provide custom pond design and installation service. From simple liner repairs and filtration upgrades to complete overhauls and 24/7 emergency plumbing jobs we do it all. We offer pond cleaning and maintenance services. Every 2 weeks is our recommendation for the average pond service. For lightly stocked ponds and fountains, a monthly service may be all that is needed. The amount you feed and stock density will determine frequency of needed pond service.
Types of Ponds
Preformed ponds and container ponds are usually the smallest variety. Commonly found in home improvement stores and easily ordered online. We can also provide a variety of ready to order preformed ponds for you to choose from. Many different and eccentric containers have been used as container ponds. We may have to coat the inside of the container to prevent issues.
Liner ponds come in an almost endless amount of shapes and sizes. They can easily flow with the natural landscape with good pond design. Waterfalls, streams, and cascades are great accents with liner ponds. Every so often a branch might fall in to the pond and poked a little hole. Maybe a rock toppled off balance and punctured the liner. These issues with liner ponds are easily and quickly located and repaired.
Concrete ponds are durable and long lasting. Everything that can be done with liner ponds can be done with concrete. Waterfalls, streams, and cascades all add special elements to the landscape. It just takes a little longer. No holes will be poked in a concrete pond. Rocks and gravel can be set permanently in the pond with concrete. Good artists can make an entire custom landscape look natural.
The water in your pond should be clear and moving. Breaking surface tension is important for oxygen exchange. The use of a waterfall, stream, and aeration are a few recommendations. Monitoring and controlling pH is important for the fish to intake nutrients. Temperature will affect bacteria levels in the ponds natural biological filtration. At 65 F bacteria levels drop to half. Fish metabolisms slow down and feeding should be cut back. High temperatures can also lead to bacteria crashes. Oxygen is depleted killing bacteria and ammonia rises as the fish struggle harder to breath. A pond of a 3 foot depth at least will provide and maintain cooler, more stable temperatures.
Foods & Feeding
Unless the temperature is controlled by heating and chilling different foods will be needed with seasons and temperatures. Warmer weather and water will call for more protein. Cooler weather and water will require less protein for easier digestion. Krill can be used as a color enhancer and warm weather treat. Most people have a tendency to over feed. A slightly larger water change may be needed for heavy feeders.
Mechanical filtration can be performed a number of ways. Good old fashion net skimming the pond to remove solid debris is essential. Net baskets and intake strainers will catch debris and need maintenance. For smaller ponds the use of filter pads may be necessary. A good bead filter will remove significant amounts of biological waste when back washed.
Chemical filtration is dependent on the conditions. It is not always needed. A bag of chemical media might help clarity of the water if there is a continuing battle with leaves. Near by trees could cause the water to look yellow or brown from tannin in the leaves. Other uses might include removing medications or potential toxins.
Biological filtration is the name of the game. With out the bacteria there would be no ponds. Bacteria grow on all the surface areas in the pond and in the filters. A good bead filter will secure the stability of bacteria in a healthy pond.
UV sterilization is recommended to keep phytoplankton blooms at bay and to reduce free swimming stages of parasites. It uses ultra violet radiation to eliminate living tissue.
Shading the pond with plants and trees will help minimize algae blooms and temperature spikes. Direct sunlight can cause many problems. Accent lights can be placed in and around the pond for night time viewing.
Parasites & Diseases
Taking preventative steps to avoid contamination goes a long way. Quarantine of 3 to 4 weeks minimum will ensure nothing came with the new arrivals. Bacterial infections are common in the winter if the bottom is dirty. It will look like red streaking in the fins from blood. Consider it an emergency. Bacterial infections can wipe out a pond in 24 hours. The fish sit on the bottom and don’t move as much when they are cold. Ich can always become a problem if the pond is unstable. A temperature swing up or down could easily trigger an outbreak.
